How to talk to your children about mental health and well-being
It can be hard to explore the issues your child may be facing and explain the importance of being mentally healthy. Reaching out for professional support can make a massive difference.
Remember to ‘put on your own oxygen mask before attempting to help others.’
This can mean researching the issues to build confidence and prepare yourself to talk to your child and answer their questions.

If you feel ready to start the conversation, here are some helpful hints:
- Choose a safe and comfortable place to talk - sometimes going for a walk can help when you’re feeling nervous
- Communicate at a level that is appropriate to a child’s age and development level
- Ask open-ended questions to encourage deeper conversations
- Listen with curiosity and empathise with them - try to understand what they are going through without passing judgement
- Share some of your own similar experiences, or someone who has experienced similar problems, so they don’t feel alone
- Explain that emotions are natural and expressing them is important
- Reassure them that there is lots of support available and that they are not alone in their journey to well-being
- Remind them that they are loved
